Dorset's only children's hospice, Julia's House, has been adopted by AquaCare as its chosen charity for the next 12 months. The Christchurch-based company, which is owned by Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water, will be providing free emergency plumbing, heating, drains and water hygiene services to the Corfe Mullen hospice. AquaCare will also encourage its 77-strong staff to raise funds for the registered charity and display the Julia's House logo on its fleet of vans which currently number 35.
Simon Booth, AquaCare's Managing Director, described Julia's House as a "very worthy cause." He added: "This is the first time AquaCare has adopted a charity and we hope the combination of practical help and fundraising will prove to be of real benefit. "The hospice receives just three per cent of its funding from the government with the remainder coming from the Dorset community. It needs every bit of help possible and we're delighted to play our part."
Julia's House is Dorset's only hospice dedicated to children with life-limiting conditions and offers care both at home and in the hospice. In 2008 Julia's House has run over 8,000 hours of care for 92 seriously ill children throughout Dorset. The charity needs to raise £2.4 million next year to sustain these services and help more children.
Martin Edwards, Chief Executive, said: "We're very grateful to AquaCare for adopting Julia's House as its chosen charity. Our work is best summed up by the words of a father of a little girl, aged three, who we help look after. He told me: ‘When no-one else cared, or at least not enough to help, Julia's House was there. We were drowning and you simply rescued us.' We rely almost totally on the local community, including businesses, to ensure that we will always be there for those that need our services."
